PEARL S. BUCK
She responds to a fan of her work, thanking him for liking her novel Peony.
Typed letter signed: "Pearl S. Buck", 1p, 7¼x10½. Perkasie, Pennsylvania, 1948 May 29. On imprinted letterhead to Mr. Wes Baleria, Los Angeles, California. In full: "I have received your letter, and so far as I know and so far as my files tell me, it is the first time I have ever heard from you. Where your other letters went, I don't know. I appreciate very much what you say about my books and I am glad that you liked PEONY. Whether other people will like it I don't know. Thank you again for writing me, I am Yours sincerely". Captioned magazine photograph, b/w, 3x4 overall, image 3x3½ (one surface), affixed at lower right margin. Buck's novel, Peony, published in 1948, the year of this letter, is the story of a Chinese bondswoman who is bought by a Jewish family. Peony falls in love with the family's son, David, whose mother wants him to marry Leah, the last Jewish girl in the village. Leah, who cares for David, takes her own life when she learns of his love for Peony, ending the Jewish lineage in the village as David is now free to marry Peony. Pearl Sydenstricker Buck (1892-1973) was the first American woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature (1938). Best known for her novels about China (including The Good Earth; 1932 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction), Buck wrote over 70 novels as well as biographies, an autobiography (My Several Worlds, 1954), dramas, children's literature and translations from the Chinese. Lightly creased with folds, not at signature. Slightly soiled at upper margin, where paper seal has been affixed to verso (light show through). Light photo corner impressions at blank corners. Photograph is lightly rippled from mounting, glue stain at upper margin of caption. Overall, fine condition.
