Typed letter signed: "Pearl S. Buck", 1 page, 7¼x6, on stationery imprinted with Perkasie, Pennsylvania rural route address. June 21, 1946. Addressed to "Mrs. Broadhurst". In full: "Dear Mrs. Broadhurst: Thank you so much for your note of June the 15th. I trust that you will have a most successful performance. Let me know how it goes. By the way, the Theatre Guild asked me the other day for a good Oriental actor and I recommend the young Filipino who played Rizal. I gave him his address and I hope that he got a job with them. I am keeping him very much in mind. Yours very sincerely, (Mrs. Richard J. Walsh)". Buck is best known for her novels like The Good Earth, but was also a playwright for stage and radio. Buck (1892-1973), born to Presbyterian missionaries, spent the first forty years of her life in China, the setting of many of her books. She was the first American woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature (1938). Best known for her novels about China (including The Good Earth; 1932 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction), Buck wrote over 70 novels as well as biographies, an autobiography (My Several Worlds, 1954), dramas, children's literature and translations from the Chinese. Lightly toned and creased. With underlinings and highlighted text in ink. Folded once and unfolded. Otherwise, fine condition.
