Typed letter signed "Pearl S. Buck". 1 page, 7x10¼, on stationery imprinted with Perkasie, Pennsylvania rural route address. December 13, 1968. Addressed to Roger L. Brooks, East Texas State University, School of Arts and Sciences, East Texas Station, Commerce, Texas. In full: "Dear Dean Brooks: Thankyou [sic] for your letter of December the 6th. I enjoyed being at the East Texas State University and you were all very kind. Of course I should be happy to autograph my books for you. Please send them to me at the above address. With kind regards, I am Sincerely Yours, Pearl S. Buck PSB HS" Accompanied by: Unsigned envelope to Roger L. Brooks, postmarked Dec. 18, 1968, from Mrs. Richard J. Walsh, Perkasie, Pennsylvania. Buck (1892-1973, born Pearl Comfort Sydenstricker in Hillsboro, West Virginia), born to Presbyterian missionaries, spent the first forty years of her life in China, the setting of many of her books. She was the first American woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature (1938). Best known for her novels about China (including The Good Earth; 1932 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction), Buck wrote over 70 novels as well as biographies, an autobiography (My Several Worlds, 1954), dramas, children's literature and translations from the Chinese. Letter and envelope are lightly toned and creased and have paperclip impression at top. Letter is folded twice and unfolded. Envelope is torn open neatly at top. Otherwise in fine condition.
