PEARL BUCK
She sends a plea to raise money for China Relief Fund to help China resist [Japanese] aggression
Typed Letter signed: "Pearl S. Buck", 1p, 4½x6¾. New York, N.Y., 1940 December 26. On personal letterhead to "My dear Mr. Coblentz". In full: "I beg you to read carefully the enclosed folder of the China Relief Legion. It gives you the opportunity to express in concrete form the measure of your sympathy for a brave and democratic people who without complaint and with unwavering determination have resisted aggression. Faithfully yours". Pearl S. Buck (1892-1973), born to Presbyterian missionaries, spent the first forty years of her life in China, the setting of many of her books. Her second novel, The Good Earth, won the 1932 Pulitzer Prize, and Buck also won the 1938 Nobel Prize in Literature for her epic works about China. She later wrote about other Asian nations, including India and Korea. Written a year before Pearl Harbor, this letter shows Buck's strong support for China, then governed by Nationalist President Chiang Kai-shek in a shaky "united front" with Mao Tse-tung's Communists, at war with Japan since 1937. Mounting tape remnants in lower corners; traces of same in upper corners. Otherwise, fine condition.
