Autograph Letter signed: "Peggy", 1 page, 11x6¾ unfolded,
5½x6¾ folded. New York, New York, May 5. On "277 Park Avenue/New York 17.
N.Y." letterhead, written to "Dear Bill". In full: "In case I
get bogged down tomorrow - Friday - I send this check for $1000 to ANTA for the
purpose I dis-cussed with you. I'll be in Stamford your Friday afternoon until
Mon-day evening if you need to talk to me." Peggy Wood (1892-1978)
appeared in at least 30 Broadway plays over half a century (1911-1960),
singing in musicals but also playing comic and dramatic parts. She was Portia in
the 1928 stage version of Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice. In the
1920s, she was an occasional visitor to the intellectual circle known as the
Algonquin Round Table, which lunched daily at New York's Algonquin Hotel.
She played mostly supporting roles in films, but starred in the much-loved
role of Norwegian-American Marta Hansen in the popular TV series I Remember
Mama (1949-1957). She received an Oscar nomination as Best Supporting
Actress as the Mother Superior in The Sound of Music (1965), although
her singing voice was gone by then and her songs had to be dubbed. Normal
