Pennies from Heaven (1981), based on the 1978 British miniseries by Dennis Potter, is a musical that highlighted the differences between the optimism of pop music, the grimness of real life and how people can get lost in one when trying to escape the other. It starred Martin as frustrated Great Depression-era song salesman Arthur who starts a disastrous affair with Peters as schoolteacher Eileen. Harper and Walken co-starred, the former as Arthur's wife Joan and the latter surprising many with a sharp performance on the dance floor. Pennies from Heaven was nominated for three Academy Awards, including a nomination for Mackie for Best Costume Design. Actor, comedian, writer, playwright and producer MARTIN, born in Waco, Texas in 1945, went into standup comedy full-time in the late 1960s. His big break came when he was guest host on NBC's Saturday Night Live in 1977. His offbeat and irreverent humor made him an instant celebrity. Martin carefully developed his persona: the well-groomed, immaculately dressed young man who goes against his appearance by behaving like a lunatic. He released four comedy albums between 1977 and 1981, winning Grammy awards for Let's Get Small and A Wild and Crazy Guy. He also received a gold record for his hit comedy song King Tut. Martin wrote his first book, Cruel Shoes, in 1977. His films include The Jerk (1979), Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid (1982), All of Me (1984), Roxanne (1987), Parenthood (1989) and Father of the Bride (1991). PETERS, born Bernadette Lazarro in Ozone Park in 1948, made her debut on the Broadway stage in 1959 (at age 11) in The Most Happy Fella. Over her Broadway career, she also won the Tony Award for Song and Dance (1986) and was nominated for Tonys for The Goodbye Girl (1993) and Gypsy (2003). In addition to her stage career, Peters also starred in several feature films, including the 1969 Joel Grey musical George M. She was nominated for a Golden Globe for Silent Movie (1976) and won one for Pennies From Heaven (1981). Peters also starred in a number of made-for-TV movies and musicals, including The Witch in Stephen Sondheim's Into the Woods (1990) and the Stepmother in Cinderella (1997), and appeared on a number of TV series. All's Fair, a CBS sitcom (1976-1977) starred Richard Crenna as a conservative journalist, and his love interest, liberal photographer Peters. Stage, screen and television actor WALKEN, born Ronald Chistopher Walken in Queens, New York in 1943 and who is adept at both comedy and drama, had already enjoyed a successful career on the stage before hitting movie stardom in 1978, when he received an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for The Deer Hunter. Walken, who was also nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award inCatch Me If You Can (2002), has also appeared in Annie Hall (1977), A View To Kill (1985), Batman Returns (1992), Wayne's World 2 (1993), Pulp Fiction (1994) and Last Man Standing (1996). HARPER, born in Chicago, Illinois in 1949,has been called "the queen of cult films", having starred in Phantom of Paradise (1974), Inserts (1977) and The Blue Iguana (1988). Other roles have included Pennies from Heaven (1981) and My Favorite Year (1982). She played Phoebe Bass on TV's It's Garry Shandling's Show (1986-1990). MACKIE, born in Monterey Park, California in 1940, is an American costume designer who's been called "The Prince of Glitter". Hegot his start in television costume design as an assistant on The Judy Garland Show. A couple of years later, he became one of the top designers creating memorable costumes for The Carol Burnett Show and later, The Sonny & Cher Comedy Show. Mackie has received 30 nominations and has won eight Emmys for his work on variety specials and shows, including Mitzi...Zings Into Spring, Mama's Family, and Carol & Company. Today, he is Hollywood's designer of one-of-a-kind fashions to the stars. Lightly scuffed and creased. Light impressions and scuff marks from disc on cover.
