CRAZYLEGS HIRSCH and PERLE MESTA
The halfback and the Washington hostess sign opposite sides of a page for radio/TV interview host George Sanders. A newspaper photo of each is attached
Autograph Note signed: "To George/A big thanks/Crazylegs Hirsch", and on verso "Perle Mesta", 7¾x6¾. A newspaper photo and clipping of Hirsch, and a captioned photo of Mesta, are affixed near their respective signatures. ELROY "CRAZYLEGS" HIRSCH (1923-2004) led the College All-Stars upset of the Los Angeles Rams in 1946, and became a key part of the Rams' revolutionary "three-end" offense in 1949. Mixing sprinter speed with halfback elusiveness, "Crazylegs" had a unique running style that made him famous. When running downfield, his muscular legs seemed to gyrate in six different directions at once. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1968. PERLE MESTA (1889-1975) was known as Washington, DC's "hostess with the mostest" for her lavish parties that attracted the capitol's glitterati. The wife of steel manufacturer George Mesta, she inherited his fortune when he died in 1925, and moved to Washington, D. C. in 1940. Mesta was a part of the National Woman's Party and was an early supporter of the Equal Rights Amendment and Harry S. Truman. Her support of the latter earned her an ambassadorship to Luxembourg. Irving Berlin fans may recognize her as the inspiration for his musical Call Me Madam, which starred Ethel Merman. George Sanders was a radio/TV interview host in Los Angeles and later in Portland. He collected autographs from guests on his show. Irregularly cut edges. Toned. Corners lightly worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
