PERNELL WHITAKER and LOU DUVA
Famed trainer Duva is shown in the ring corner with Whitaker, one of his most champion boxers. Whitaker would become a standout trainer himself
Photograph signed: "Pernell/Whitaker", "Lou Duva". Color, 8x10. PERNELL WHITAKER (b. 1964), called "Sweet Pea," won gold medals at the 1983 Pan American Games and the 1984 Olympics. After turning pro, he won title belts in five different weight classes: the WBA Light Middleweight, WBC Welterweight, IBF Light Welterweight crowns, and Lightweight crowns from several boxing federations. He entered the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2006, his first year of eligibility. In 2002, Ring magazine ranked him #10 on its list of the 100 greatest boxers of the last 80 years. LOU DUVA (b. 1922), once a moderately successful pro boxer himself, managed a trucking firm and worked as a bail bondsman before devoting himself to his primary passion, boxing. He founded his own gym, Garden Gym, and began training and promoting boxers, including eventually 19 world champions. (These included Evander Holyfield, Joey Giardello and Pernell Whitaker.) With other members of his family, including brother Dan and daughter in law Kathy Duva, he created Main Event, broadcast on ESPN. Lou Duva is enshrined in the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
