Kelton (1907-1968) played supporting comedy roles in films of the early
1930s (The Bowery, Bed of Roses), specializing in bawdy roles
(cabaret singer, prostitute) which would disappear with the Hayes Code. She was
a frequent radio presence in the 1940s, using 5 different voices to
portray 5 characters on Milton Berle's show. She appeared in 12 Broadway plays,
earning Tony nominations for Greenwillow (1960) and Spofford
(1968), but her best remembered role may have been as the mother of
Marion the Librarian in the stage and film versions of The Music Man
(1957, 1962). In the original version of The Honeymooners, part of the
Cavalcade of Stars, Kelton as Alice Kramden, opposite Jackie Gleason's
Ralph. She was removed from the show and replaced with Audrey Meadows after her
husband, Ralph Bell, was blacklisted. (The stigma carried over to her.) In
1963 she played Robert Duvall's overbearing mother in the classic Twilight
Zone episode "Minature", and she returned for an episode of The Honeymooners
(1967) as the mother of Alice, now played by Sheila MacRae. Heavy surface
