PETE ROSE
Pete says he's sorry for betting on baseball!
Baseball signed: "I'm sorry/I bet on/baseball/Pete Rose". Rawlings Official Major League
Baseball, Allan H. Selig, Commissioner. PSA/DNA authentication sticker (AE45588) affixed
and accompanied by PSA/DNA Certificate of Authenticity. Rose, baseball's career leader
in hits (4,256), singles, at bats and games played, had more than 200 hits in a season
ten times. Nicknamed "Charlie Hustle", the 17-time All-Star during a 24-year major
league career (1963-1986) went on to manage the Cincinnati Reds (1984-1989), the team
with which he had starred four of his six World Series. Allegations of betting on baseball
resulted in an agreement between Rose and Baseball Commissioner A. Bartlett
Giamatti (1989 August 23) under which Rose was declared "permanently ineligible" to
participate in Major League baseball (and hence ineligible to appear on the Hall of
Fame ballot). (Giamatti died suddenly one week later of a heart attack.) Under the
agreement, Rose acknowledged that Giamatti had a "factual basis to impose the
penalty", but neither affirmed nor denied that he had bet on baseball. The document did
not bar Rose from applying for reinstatement, nor did it bar him from making statements on the
controversy, "so long as no such public statement contradicts the terms of this agreement."Rose
applied for reinstatement in 1997. Many fans support his reinstatement and/or election to the
Hall. Fine condition.
