PETE ROSE and A. BARTLETT GIAMATTI.
Giamatti Suspends Rose from Baseball
Comprises: (1) Typed Letter Signed: "Bart Giamatti" as President of Yale University, 1p, 6½x8½. New Haven Connecticut, 1979 September 5. On Yale University stationery to Dennis Spalding, FAA, Olympia, Washington. In full: "I have been away from the office for a few weeks and have just now returned to find your letter of July 22. In response to your first question-keep it clear and keep it simple. And to your second - I would like to think that this quote applied to me, but I would not be so presumptuous. With best wishes, Sincerely," Slightly creased. Fine condition. (2) Photograph signed: "Pete Rose". Color, 7½x10. Fine condition. Baseball Commissioner Bart Giamatti suspended Cincinnati Reds Manager Pete Rose from baseball on August 23, 1989. Rose, who retired from playing with a .303 batting average, signed an agreement with Giamatti neither denying nor admitting that he had placed bets on baseball, particularly the Cincinnati Reds, the team he had managed since 1984 and played with for 19 years. It was not the first suspension Rose received from Giamatti. As National League Manager, Giamatti hit Rose with a 30-day suspension for disputing a call and shoving an umpire. Giamatti, President of Yale University from 1978 until 1985, served as President of the National League from 1986 until taking over as the Major League Commissioner on April 1, 1989. Rose, who amassed 19 major league titles including his 4.256 hits during his playing career, had over a year left on his managerial contract with the Reds. According to Major League Rule 15 (c), Rose can apply for reinstatement once every 12 months after the suspension. Two items. Framed to an overall size of 33x23.
