PETE ROSE
Signed front-page article from the original September 9, 1985 Cincinnati Enquirer reporting on Rose tying Ty Cobb's record of 4,191 hits.
Newspaper Article signed: "Pete Rose", 8 pages, 13½x22½. This is a front-page article reporting on Pete Rose tying Ty Cobb's record of 4,191 hits. Pete Rose, baseball's career leader in hits (4,256), singles, at bats and games played, had more than 200 hits in a season ten times. Nicknamed "Charlie Hustle", the 17-time All-Star during a 24-year major league career (1963-1986) went on to manage the Cincinnati Reds (1984-1989), the team with which he had starred four of his six World Series. Allegations of betting on baseball resulted in an agreement between Rose and Baseball Commissioner A. Bartlett Giamatti (1989 August 23) under which Rose was declared "permanently ineligible" to participate in Major League baseball (and hence ineligible to appear on the Hall of Fame ballot). (Giamatti died suddenly one week later of a heart attack.) Under the agreement, Rose acknowledged that Giamatti had a "factual basis to impose the penalty", but neither affirmed nor denied that he had bet on baseball. The document did not bar Rose from applying for reinstatement, nor did it bar him from making statements on the controversy, "so long as no such public statement contradicts the terms of this agreement." Rose applied for reinstatement in 1997. Many fans support his reinstatement and/or election to the Hall. One vertical and one horizontal fold. Slightly worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
