PETER BENCHLEY
The author responds to a fan saying, "I don't think that
any individual has helped me more than any other in my work but I have read a
good deal and, of course, other writers always influence you"
Typed Letter signed: "Peter Benchley", 1p, 5¾x8¾. No place,
1981 October 2. To Michael Judd, Livermore, California. In full:
"I am sorry it has taken me so long to answer your letter. Doubleday held on
to it for a long time, and then, when they did send it along to me, I was away
for several months. So please forgive me. I'm afraid I can't sign the book
you sent because it managed to get itself torn to shreds in the mails. I
don't think that any individual has helped me more than any other in my work but
I have read a good deal and, of course, other writers always influence you.
Sincerely". The novels of Peter Benchley (1940-2006) include
Jaws, The Deep and
The Island, all of which were made into motion pictures. Jaws
(1974), Benchley's first novel, spent more than 40 weeks on "The New York Times"
best-seller list, and it was made into a film by Steven Spielberg in 1975.
Benchley, who wrote three drafts of the screenplay for the film, appeared as a
reporter on the beach in the Fourth of July scene. The Oscar-winning
Jaws was the most profitable Hollywood movie to that time. Slightly
creased with fold, not at signature. Fine condition.
