On May 31, 1996, Bird began his fifth attempt to be the first to row from Russia to the United States. On June 2, 1996, he was missing and presumed dead after his 29-foot craft capsized approximately 1,300 miles east of Japan. He had expected his 4,450-mile voyage to take 200-plus days. Light surface nicks at right background. Mounting remnants on verso (no show through). Fine condition.
