PETER J. BRENNAN
Index card signed by U. S. Secretary of Labor Peter J. Brennan as in blue ink
Signature: "Peter J Brennan/U.S. Secretary of Labor" in blue ink. 5x3 card. A leader of New York City's building and construction workers, Brennan (1918-1990) gained prominence as an outspoken opponent of affirmative action in the building trades. When New York Mayor John Lindsay ordered city flags lowered after the shooting of anti-war students at Kent State University (May 1970), Brennan helped organize counter-demonstrations which became known as the "hard hat riots." He led a union delegation which presented a hard hat to President Nixon. After helping deliver a greatly increased share of the union vote in New York State to President Nixon in his re-election campaign, Brennan was named Secretary of Labor (1973-1975). Lightly toned, otherwise in fine condition.
