PETER COOPER
Cooper handwrote, signed and dated this letter to Edward M. Skielman, Esq. in 1859 to turn down an invitation: "a previous engagement will deprive me the privilege of joining with you to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of your honored society."
Autograph letter signed "Peter Cooper". 1 page, 4¾x7¾. New York, July 15, 1859. Addressed to Edward M. Skielman, Esq. regretting that "a previous engagement will deprive me the privilege of joining with you to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of your honored society." Cooper (1791-1883, born in New York City) designed and built the first American locomotive, named Tom Thumb, in 1830; was the promoter and financial backer of Cyrus Field in the laying of the Atlantic cable; and founded Cooper Union in New York City (1859) "for the advancement of science and art". The school is still giving free courses in science, chemistry, electricity, engineering and art. In 1876, Cooper was the Greenback party nominee for President, receiving 81,737 votes out of 8.4 million votes cast. Lightly toned, soiled and cresed. Adhesive and mounting remnants on verso, which have stained paper; 1 stain touches the "er" of signature. Rust stain from clip at top edge. Page neatly torn from pad or notebook on left edge. Folded thrice and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
