Two items: 1)
Signature: "Peter Cooper". With black ink notations in corners and on verso in unknown hand. 3¼x1¾ heavy card. Lightly toned, stained and soiled. Mounting paper and adhesive remnants on verso, which show through lightly. Otherwise in fine condition. 2) Unsigned engraving of Cooper. B/w, 3½x4 image, 8x10½ overall, one surface, with printed facsimile signature underneath image. Vignette-style bust portrait. Lightly toned, especially around edges, soiled and creased. Otherwise in fine condition. Cooper (1791-1883, born in New York City) designed and built the first American locomotive, named Tom Thumb, in 1830; was the promoter and financial backer of Cyrus Field in the laying of the Atlantic cable; and founded Cooper Union in New York City (1859) "for the advancement of science and art". The school is still giving free courses in science, chemistry, electricity, engineering and art. In 1876, Cooper was the Greenback party nominee for President, receiving 81,737 votes out of 8.4 million votes cast.
