Cooper signed this dated New York Public School award for Maria Nunnst in
1843.
Partly printed document signed "Peter Cooper" for the School
Committee and "Caroline Whiting" as Teacher. With pencil
notation on verso in unknown hand. 1 page, 7¼x9¼. Dec. 1843. An award
presented to Maria Nunns, a student at "New York Public School,/No. 13" for
"regular & punctual attendance with correct deportment & diligent
attention to her studies." Excellent vignette at top center. Cooper
(1791-1883, born in New York City) designed and built the first American
locomotive, named Tom Thumb, in 1830; was the promoter and
financial backer of Cyrus Field in the laying of the Atlantic cable; and
founded Cooper Union in New York City (1859) "for the advancement of
science and art". The school is still giving free courses in science, chemistry,
electricity, engineering and art. In 1876, Cooper was the Greenback
party nominee for President, receiving 81,737 votes out of 8.4 million votes
cast. Lightly toned, especially around the edges, creased and rippled. Lightly
discolored from mounting or frame. Pinhead-size nick at lower left blank edge.
