PETER COOPER
Cooper signed this dated manuscript document in New York in 1836 to
acknowledge that he had received an $8.32 payment from William Conley for
merchandise received.
Manuscript document signed "Received Payment/Peter Cooper", 1 page,
7¾x2¾ mounted to 8x3¼ sheet of paper. New York, March 21, 1836. According
to this document, which is either a receipt or part of an accounting record,
William Conley paid Cooper $8.32 for merchandise received. We're not what
this merchandise was; it's listed as a part or inventory number on this
document. Cooper (1791-1883, born in New York City) designed and built
the first American locomotive, named Tom Thumb, in 1830; was the
promoter and financial backer of Cyrus Field in the laying of the Atlantic
cable; and founded Cooper Union in New York City (1859) "for the
advancement of science and art". The school is still giving free courses in
science, chemistry, electricity, engineering and art. In 1876, Cooper was
the Greenback party nominee for President, receiving 81,737 votes out of
8.4 million votes cast. Very fragile. Lightly toned, spoiled, stained and
creased. Vertical separation in middle of document, which touches signature.
Tape repairs to separation. Edges are ragged and torn. Tape remnants in upper
right and lower left corner. Folded once horizontally and six times vertically.
Mounting paper has irregular edges and mounting remnant in lower right corner,
plus adhesive remnants and paper loss on verso (no show-through). Otherwise in
fine condition.
