PETER CUSHING
Black and white publicity photograph of Peter Cushing in a suit and
tie.
Photograph inscribed and signed: "Best wishes to Lorraine/Yrs
sincerely./Peter Cushing/1959." B/w, 6½x8¾. In 1959, Cushing starred in
John Paul Jones and in two of his most memorable films, The Mummy
and The Hound of the Baskervilles (beginning with his performance in this
British film, Cushing would become as identified in the character in Britain as
Basil Rathbone was in the U.S.). British stage actor Peter Cushing
(1913-1994) also found international success in films, including several
portrayals of Baron Frankenstein (beginning with The Curse of
Frankenstein in 1957), and as Sherlock Holmes (beginning with The
Hound of the Baskervilles in 1959). He also played the banally evil Grand
Moff Tarkin in Star Wars (1977). Though best known for his horror
films, Cushing was said to be proudest of his classical stage performances.
Cushing, who was made an Officer of the British Empire for his contributions
to acting in Britain and worldwide, also wrote an autobiography. Adequate
contrast. Creased, touching cheek and hair. Minor surface creases and scratches
(most not evident head on). Tape remnants at lower edge, irregular left and
upper edges.
