PETER DOMINICK
As US Senator, he signs a typed letter to a newsman (1973), stating that the US has achieved its objectives in Vietnam.
Typed Letter signed: "Peter Dominick" as US Senator, 1 page, 8½x11. Washington, D.C., 1973 February 23. On Senate letterhead to George Sanders, KWJJ Broadcasting Company, Portland, Oregon. In full: "Thank you for your letter of February 1 concerning our national survey. First, I was opposed to our becoming involved in a land war in Asia, although I believe we were justified, in fact in a certain sense obligated through our treaty commitments, to come to the aid of the Republic of Vietnam when that country was threatened by outside forces. I think President Nixon has accomplished what we set out to do in securing the people of Vietnam a reasonable chance to determine their own destiny. As we withdraw from the area, I am confident we will maintain sufficient power in Asia to support the Nixon doctrine, but I doubt that we will ever become involved in a war such as the one we have finally concluded. Best regards, Sincerely". Peter Dominick (1915-1981), a Republican, represented Colorado in the US House of Representatives (1961-1963) and Senate (1963-1975). He was defeated in his bid for a third term by Democrat Gary Hart. Dominick served briefly as US Ambassador to Switzerland. Dominick wrote this letter less than a month after the cease-fire agreement (January 28) which seemingly ended the Vietnam War and earned Nobel Peace Prizes for Henry Kissinger and Le Duc Tho. Dominick's hopes as expressed in this letter were not fulfilled, however, for reasons which are still hotly debated. On April 30, 1975, North Vietnamese troops stormed into Saigon as the last US personnel fled by helicopter from the embassy rooftop. Twenty years later, the US restored full diplomatic relations with the unified Socialist Republic of Vietnam. Normal mailing folds. Lightly creased at corners. Left edge has three minor chips. Fine condition.
