PETER GRAVES
Small 4¾x7 b/w bust photograph of Golden Globe-winning actor Peter
Graves in a suit and tie, signed with his "Best Wishes"
Inscribed photograph signed "To Dennis/Best Wishes/Peter
Graves" in blue ink. Black ink notations on verso in unknown hand. B/w, 4¾x7
overall, 4¼x6¼ image, one surface. Graves (1926-2010), born Peter
Aurness, appeared in 130 movies, TV shows and video games between 1951 and
2010, but is probably best known as James Phelps, the leader of an elite
covert operations unit on the weekly TV adventure series Mission:
Impossible (1967-1973). The role earned him a Golden Globe in 1971
and an Emmy Award nomination. (He reprised Phelps in a revamp of the series,
which lasted from 1988 to 1990) Modern audiences may also know him as a
presenter on the long-running documentary series Biography
(1994-2006). Graves often played straight-arrow, authoritative figures,
which the team of Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker brilliantly lampooned with Captain
Clarence "Joey, do you like movies about gladiators?" Oveur in Airplane!
(1980) and its sequel Airplane II: The Sequel (1982). Graves
paid his dues in a long string of B movies before Mission: Impossible.
One of his more memorable roles from this period was a Nazi spy in the war
movie classic Stalag 17 (1953). But Mystery Science Theatre
3000 fans may also recognize Graves from no less than five movies savaged by
Joel, Mike and the 'bots: It Conquered the World (1956), Beginning of
the End (1957), Attack of the Eye Creatures (1965), SST: Death
Flight (1977) and Parts: The Clonus Horror (1979). He was the
younger brother of actor James Arness. Fine condition.
