Typed letter signed: “Peter” in black ink. 7¼x10½. Los Angeles. October 30, 1979. Typed
on personal letterhead to “Dear Charles:” in full: “Be happy to see you whenever you come
and there is always a free meal waiting. Sincerely”. Peter J. Pitchess (1912-1999) was the 28th
Sheriff of Los Angeles County, California. After getting his law degree at the University of
Utah, he started his career as a special agent with the FBI where he spent 12 years in
Washington, D.C.; El Paso, Texas; Kansas City, Missouri; and Los Angeles. He rose to head
the criminal investigative section of the Bureau's Los Angeles field office, resigning in
1952. He was elected Sheriff in 1958 and kept the position until 1982. He is credited with
modernizing the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, turning the department into
the sixth-largest police department, and the largest sheriff's department, in the United States.
