PETER LUKE
Rare signed letter from the author and producer in response to questions asked by a fan, saying that he believes his adaption of Hadrian the Seventh has longevity and that it is important to have creativity and perceptiveness
Typed letter signed: "Peter Luke", in black ink, 1 page, 8¼x11¾. January 29, 1979. Ireland. In part: "Dear Mr. Norbutt, Thank you for your letter of 5 January and I am flattered that your group found an interest in one of my works. Your first question is difficult to answer. Cyril Connolly's definition of a 'lasting' work is one that survives for ten years. I would say that my 'Hadrian VII' had done that…The second question is a bit easier. Creativity and perceptiveness mean ipso facto a heightened degree of sensitivity and imaginativeness. These qualities give one a heightened appreciation of life…I have had my ups and downs and I expect my life will continue that way until I am taken to the cleaners". Peter Luke (1919-1995) was a producer, editor, and author, best known for his stage adaption of the Frederik Rolfe novel Hadrian the Seventh. Luke never had much in the way of published works and found more success as a producer, working as a producer for several series, most notably the teleplay series The Wednesday Play (1964). Normal mailing folds. Light surface creases. Corners lightly worn and creased. Slightly toned. Top and bottom edges slightly creased, with small tear along bottom edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
