MARY TRAVERS
Vintage b/w bust photo of Mary Travers in a polka-dot dress with Peter, Paul and Mary bandmates Peter Yarrow and Paul Stookey, signed by Travers
Photograph signed: "Mary Travers". B/w, 8x9¾ overall, image 7¼x7¼ (one surface), printed on cardstock. Mary Travers (1937-2009) was a founding member of legendary folk group Peter, Paul and Mary. Travers grew up in New York City's Greenwich Village and with the folk songs of the Weavers, Leadbelly and Woody Guthrie. She'd already performed at Carnegie Hall and recorded with Pete Seeger with a group called the Songswappers before forming Peter, Paul and Mary in 1961 with Peter Yarrow and Noel Paul Stookey. Peter, Paul and Mary put 11 songs on the Billboard Pop Singles and Adult Contemporary charts, including the civil rights anthem If I Had a Hammer (1962) and the chart toppers Blowin' in the Wind (1963), Puff (The Magic Dragon) (1963) and a cover of John Denver's Leaving on a Jet Plane (1969), with lead vocals by Travers, and won three Grammies for If I Had a Hammer, Blowin' in the Wind and the 1969 album Peter, Paul and Mommy. The band broke up in 1970, and Travers continued to perform and record as a soloist, releasing the Adult Contemporary Top 10 song Follow Me (1971), before reuniting with Stookey and Yarrow in 1978. Lightly toned and bowed. Errors in negative were reproduced in photo. Photo is slightly out-of-focus. Otherwise, fine condition.
