PETER RENDL
Shown as he appeared in the Oberammergau Passion Play. A rare
item!
Postcard Photograph signed (in German, translated): "Peter Rendel.
Joseph of Arimathea 1910/St. John 1890-1900". Sepia, 3½x5½. In 1634, the
residents of Oberammergau, in Bavaria, vowed that if God spared them from the
bubonic plague, they would perform a play depicting the life of Jesus every ten
years. The town was largely spared, and the community has been honoring
its end of the bargain ever since. The most recent performance was from May
to October, 2010. Although producer and directors may come from outside, all
cast members (over 2,000 of them) are still villagers. Peter Rendl, whose
father had first appeared in the play in 1850, was considered too old to play
the disciple John in 1910. "I am only Joseph of Arimathea now," he told an
interviewer sadly. Corners lightly worn. Otherwise, fine
condition.
