PETER SPIER. First Day Cover signed: "Peter Spier/1991", 6½x3¾. FDC honoring Mary Cassatt, four 5-cent stamps affixed, postmarked Washington, DC, November 17, 1966, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Dutch-born artist and illustrator Peter Spier has illustrated almost 150 children's books since 1953. In 1961, he wrote and illustrated The Fox Went Out on a Chilly Night, the first of 15 of his own works and the winner of the Caldecott Honor Award (1962). His work has also been recognized with a number of other awards, including The Boston Globe Horn Book (illustration) Award (1967, for London Bridge is Falling Down), the Christopher Award (1971, for The Erie Canal), the Caldecott Medal, the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award and the Christopher Award (all 1978, for Noah's Ark), a second Christopher Award (1981, for People) and a Silver Medallion from the University of Southern Mississippi. Lightly stained on verso (no show through). Fine condition.
