Thomson's score card for the 3rd round of the US Golf Association Senior Open, Laurel
Championship, Laurel Valley Golf Club, 1989. Thomson records a score of 76 on the Par-72
course. Australian golfer PETER THOMSON (1929-2018) won the British Open five
times between 1954 and 1965, including three consecutive trophies (1954-1956). He won
the national championship tourneys of nine different countries, notching the New Zealand
title nine times. Thomson also had good success on the senior circuit (12 wins) and has been a
prolific golf writer for over half a century. He entered the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1988.
BEN SMITH (b. 1920) was enshrined in the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame in 1990, having
led the University of Michigan to an NCAA golf championship and notched several amateur
golf tourney wins in the state. Smith qualified for six USGA championship tournaments, but
didn't pursue a professional golf career. After sub chaser duty with the US Navy in World War
II, Smith worked his way to the top Fyfe Electric in Detroit, buying the company in 1971.
