PETER UEBERROTH
Letter signed as President of the Olympic Organizing Committee
Typed Letter signed: "Peter V. Ueberroth", 1 page, 7¼x10½. Los Angeles, California, 1984 October 2. On his letterhead as President of the Los Angeles Olympic Organizing Committee to Henry P. Slapinski, Victoria, Australia. In full: "Your thoughtful letter of August 23rd is very much appreciated. Please excuse the tardiness in replying, but we have been extremely busy with the business of closing down our Committee affairs. The autographed photograph that you requested is enclosed. [Item not included.] Thank you for including me in your collection. Sincerely". Peter Ueberroth (b. 1932) founded First Travel Corp. in 1963, which had become North America's second largest travel firm by the time he sold it in 1980. Ueberroth, who had tried out for the 1956 US Olympic team (water polo), proved a very successful organizer of the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, introducing the torch relay, expanding sponsorships, at ending the games with a $250 million surplus. He was Time magazine's Man of the Year in 1984. Ueberroth served as Major League Baseball Commissioner (1984-1989), greatly increasing MLB's profitability and cracking down on cocaine abuse, but generating serious future problems through the owner collusion which - until reversed by court order - curtailed the free agent market. More recent endeavors include Rebuild Los Angeles, and co-ownership (with Arnold Palmer and Clint Eastwood) of the Pebble Beach golf course. Fine condition.
