Peter Vertiel (1920-2007), the son of anti-Hitler emigrés, writer
Berthold and actress Salka Vertiel, was a novelist and screenwriter. His
original and adapted screenplays included Saboteur (1942), Decision
Before Dawn (1950), The Sun Also Rises (1953) and The Old Man and
the Sea (1958). His novel White Hunter Black Heart, inspired by his
experience as an un-credited writer on location in Africa during the making of
The African Queen, was made into a movie in 1990. Vertiel was married
to actress Deborah Kerr from 1960 until her death, 17 days before his.
Robert Redford's character in The Way We Were (1973) was reportedly
based on Vertiel, with Barbra Streisand playing a character inspired by
Vertiel's first wife, Virginia Ray. Toned. Corners worn. Otherwise, fine
