PETER WALKER
Signature given as Britain's first Secretary of State for the Environment, the first such office in the world
Signature: "Peter Walker" as Secretary of State for the Environment, 3¼x1½ slip. Affixed to a sheet with transmittal letter signed by his personal secretary, dated August 2, 1971; clipped seals of his office and of the House of Commons, and newspaper article detailing his official duties. Peter Walker (1931-2010) represented Worcester in the House of Commons from 1961 to 1992. Personally close to Prime Minister Edward Heath, he nevertheless continued to serve in top government posts under Margaret Thatcher. (A founder of the Tory Reform Group, he was associated with the liberal wing of the Conservative Party). Appointed by Heath as Environment Secretary (1970-1972), he was the first person of Cabinet rank anywhere in the world with this responsibility. His other key posts included Secretary of Trade and Industry, Agriculture Minister, Energy Secretary, and Secretary of State for Wales. He survived a financial scandal in 1973, for his partnership in the discredited and bankrupt corporate raider firm Slater Walker. He was made a life peer in 1992 as Baron Walker of Worcester. (A life peerage is not inherited.) Walker lived just long enough to seen his son, Robin Walker, elected to his old Parliamentary seat. Overall, fine condition.
