PETER ZEZEL
The late NHL center signs as, "#25" in blue ink.
Signature: "Peter Zezel/#25," in blue ink, 5x3. Peter Zezel
(1965-2009) was a professional ice hockey center who played 15 seasons
with the Philadelphia Flyers, Washington Capitals, Toronto Maple Leafs, St.
Louis Blues, Dallas Stars, New Jersey Devils and Vancouver Canucks between
1984 and 1999. A multi-talented athlete, Zezel was also an impressive soccer
player and continued to play during his off season, becoming a member of
Canada's national team in the 1982 CONCACAF U-20 Tournament. Zezel retired
early from the NHL when his niece was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Zezel was
willing to continue to play as long as he could be closer to home, but Canuck's
manager Brian Burke refused to trade him to a closer city. In retirement, he
was running the Peter Zezel Hockey and Sports Camp when a rare blood disease
nearly killed him in 2001. The disease eventually formed into blood hemorrhage
in his brain, and he died in 2009. Lightly toned. Pencil note (unknown hand) on
verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
