PETULA CLARK
Very unusual image of the pop singer, shown in evening gown and long
gloves
Photograph inscribed and signed: "Ellie,/My best wishes/to you
always/Pet Clark". B/w, 8x10. English vocalist Petula "Pet" Clark (b.
1932) was a child radio and film star during World War II, billed as
"Britain's Shirley Temple" and entertaining troops with fellow child actress
Julie Andrews. She had some minor hit records in the 1950s, and appeared in
several films, working with Anthony Newley in Vice Versa and with Alec
Guinness in The Card. Then, in the 1960s, she became a major
international star, starting with her hit single "Downtown" (1965), the first of
fifteen consecutive Top 40 hits in the USA. She also revitalized her film
career, starring opposite Fred Astaire in Finian's Rainbow and Peter
O'Toole in Goodbye Mr. Chips. Clark continues to perform in the new
millennium, popular in nightclubs, music festivals, and in her own one-woman
show. Her New York show in 2012, which included a popular parody of her hit
"Downtown," was extended due to heavy ticket demand. Lightly worn. Lightly
creased. Lightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
