PHIL SILVERS
A cover for a Playbill of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum signed by the actor
Show bill cover signed: "Best wishes/always/Phil Silvers", 6x9. Cover of "Playbill" magazine for the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre. No date, but this revival of the Stephen Sondheim musical, "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" played there 1972 March 30-August 12. Signed on b/w cover photo showing Silvers in starring role of the slave Pseudolus, for which he earned a Tony as Best Actor. Former vaudeville and burlesque performer Phil Silvers (1911-1985) starred in film comedies from the early 1940s, but his big successes came on TV and on stage. Television viewers remember him best as Sergeant Bilko, a role for which he won five Emmys, in the sitcom You'll Never Get Rich (1955-1959). His Broadway successes include Yokel Boy (1939), High Button Shoes (1947), Top Banana (1950, which won him a Tony), Do Re Mi (1960), and his Tony-winning Forum performance featured here. Silvers would play a different character, brothel owner Lycus, in the 1966 film version. Horizontal fold crosses the "Si" of Silvers. Fine condition.
