PHIL WOODS QUARTET
The famed and talented musician is shown with the core members of his ensemble, Mike Melillo, Steve Gilmore and Bill Goodwin during a performance, signed in black felt tip
Printed Photograph Signed in Ink: "Phil Woods", "Steve Gilmore", "Mike Melillo", "Bill Goodwin" in black felt tip. B/w. 10x8. Captioned in lower margin. PHIL WOODS (1931-2015) was a bebop jazz composer, woodwind musician and bandleader. After performing with avant-garde jazz groups in Europe, Woods returned to the US in 1972 and soon after formed the Phil Woods Quartet. Sometimes called "the New Bird" for his musical affinity to bebop legend Charlie Parker; he married Parker's widow, Chan. He performed as a sideman with such jazz giants as Dizzy Gillespie and Thelonius Monk, and is known to a rock audience for his solo on Billy Joel's "Just the Way You Are."  Altogether Woods, alone and with his ensemble, was nominated for seven Grammy Awards, winning four. He was a founder of the annual Delaware Water Gap Celebration of the Arts. Woods is shown here on tenor saxophone with the core members of his quartet: MIKE MELILLO (b. 1939) on piano, STEVE GILMORE (b. 1943) on bass, and BILL GOODWIN (b. 1942) on drums. Goodwin has also produced all of the Woods recordings. Corners slightly worn and creased. Ink stamp on verso. Fine condition.
