The British politician pens his name on this album leaf
Signature: “Swinton/ 11 Nov 1952”, in iron gall ink, 5½x6. Philip Cunliffe-Lister, 1st Earl of Swinton (1884-1972), born Philip Lloyd-Greame, was a Conservative politician from 1920 to 1950. He was also known as The Viscount Swinton from 1935 until 1955. A graduate of both Winchester College and University College, Cunliffe-Lister was enlisted during the First World War. In 1918, Cunliffe-Lister was elected to Parliament. Knighted in 1920, Cunliffe-Lister's first ministerial post was as Parliament Secretary to the Board of Trade. He was a privy counsellor, and then served as president of the Board of Trade from 1922 to 1931. During World War II, Cunliffe-Lister was made the first minister of civil aviation. He retired at the same time as Winston Churchill in 1955, and was honored with the noble title of the Earl of Swinton. Lightly toned, especially at edges. Bottom edge irregular from being neatly removed from album. Otherwise, fine condition.
