PHILIP GIBBS. ALS: "Philip Gibbs.", 1p, 4½x7. 36
Ladbroke Grove, 1921 September 20. On imprinted sheet to unknown recipient
[name illegible]. In full: "I am exceedingly sorry I cannot come
round this morning for the sitting as I must go to my office for a bit of
work. Perhaps you will give me another opportunity later on. Yours very
sincerely". British journalist and author Philip Gibbs (1877-1962) was
one of five official British reporters during WWI. Gibbs, who published
his first article in the "Daily Chronicle" in 1894 and the first of his books,
Founders of the Empire, five years later, got a boost to his career when
he was appointed as literary editor at the "Daily Mail". He worked on
other prominent newspapers before going to the Western Front after the outbreak
of the first World War. Although the War Office in London denied him permission
to remain there (and Gibbs would be arrested and returned home), he was
officially accredited as a wartime correspondent a short time later,
along with four other men. In addition to his stream of newspaper articles for
the "Daily Telegraph" and "Daily Chronicle", Gibbs wrote a number of
books during the war years, including The Soul of War (1915), The
Battle of the Somme (1917), From Bapaume to Passchendaele (1918) and
The Realities of War (1920). Gibbs, who was knighted at the end of WWI,
again served as a correspondent (this time for the "Daily Sketch") during WWII.
His works also include several autobiographical sketches, including
Adventures in Journalism (1923), The Pageant of the Years (1946),
Crowded Company (1949) and Life's Adventure (1957). Lightly
creased with fold, not at signature. Ink smudged at some words (all legible).
Glue stains on verso (minor show through at first three lines of writing).
Overall, fine condition.
