PHILIP J. McCOOK
As Justice of the New York Superior Court, he signed this autograph letter, thanking someone for sending him a copy of a hymn
Autograph Letter signed: "P. McCook", 1 page, 5x8. New York City, 1932 February 17. On his letterhead as Judge of the New York Superior Court to Martin Taylor. In full: "I liked Prof. Shepard's hymn from the first, and it was fine of you to have a photographic record made; also most kind to send me one. With one son already a graduate of Trinity, another in college, and the third an aspirant if health and ability permit, I am of course particularly interested. Drop in on me sometime. Sincerely". Philip J. McCook (b. 1873), although already in his early forties, received a Distinguished Service Cross for his heroism as an intelligence officer with the 5th Infantry Division in combat in France during World War I. In 1920 he was appointed a New York Superior Court Judge in 1920, serving until 1943. He was presiding judge at the racketeering trial of Charles "Lucky" Luciano, the guilty verdict from which made national headlines for chief prosecutor (and later Governor and Presidential candidate) Thomas E. Dewey. In private practice after leaving the bench, McCook was defense counsel for the International Workers Organization, charged with being a communist front organization. One hole at top edge from hole-punch. Lightly toned around edges. Sticky note with pencil note (unknown hand) affixed at top edge. Fine condition.
