Autograph mastic quotation signed "For Philip James" in blue ink. Blue ink notations in unknown hand on front and verso and lead pencil notations in top left corner. Red ink music bars and black ink address stamped on envelope. 7x3½. Postmarked Manhasset, New York, July 1, 1969. Addressed to Homer W. Hatahway, Everett, Washington. Two American stamps affixed. American composer James (1890-1975) is best known for his choral and orchestral music. During World War I, James was Bandmaster of the American Expeditionary Forces Band. Upon his return home, James completed his music education, co-founded the New Jersey Orchestra and served as its first Conductor and became an instructor in the music department at New York University. In 1929, James became the regular conductor of the Bamberger Little Symphony on radio station WOR. Normal postal stamps. Envelope is open and empty. Lightly soiled. Signature touches stamped music bars. Lightly rounded and creased corners. Paper loss under flap from envelope adhesive (no show-through). Random ink stains. Otherwise in fine condition.
