BRITISH MUSICIANS: RICHARD RODNEY BENNETT and THE PHILIP JONES BRASS ENSEMBLE
Yellow 5x3½ album leaf signed in Cheltenham in 1968
Signatures: "Richard Rodney/Bennett" and 2 unidentified signatures, one of whom has added: "Cheltenham 6-7-68" , 5x3½ album leaf. Also signed on verso: "Philip Jones Brass Ensemble/Philip Jones", "John I. Iverson", "Justin Connolly/Cheltenham '68", "John Fletcher", "Elgin Howarth". Englishman RICHARD RODNEY BENNETT (b. 1936) performs and composes in a variety of musical idioms. A competent singer and pianist, he has composed jazz (including a concerto for Stan Getz, 1990), choral and orchestral works, and movie scores. Three of his film scores (Far from the Madding Crowd, 1967; Nicholas and Alexandra, 1971; and Murder on the Orient Express, 1974) received Oscar nominations. Prince Charles commissioned him to write a memorial piece for the Queen Mother. Bennett was knighted in 1998. Trumpet player PHILIP JONES (1928-2000) formed the PHILIP JONES BRASS ENSEMBLE in 1951, devoting most of his time to the group from the mid-1960s. The ensemble was usually a quintet, but could perform with from 4 to 10 instruments, as needed. As a quintet, the group included two trumpets, a French horn, a trombone and a tuba. The group toured and recorded extensively, often accompanied by a well known pianist with an eclectic repertoire that extended from Bach and Handel to Pink Floyd and Paul McCartney. The ensemble received many commissions, which upon Jones' death were bequeathed to the Royal Northern College of Music. The Philip Jones Brass Ensemble was busy in 1968, the year these signatures were gathered, touring extensively and releasing two recorded albums: Voices and Brass and Glad Tidings. JOHN IVERSON played trumpet and functioned as an alternate conductor. JOHN FLETCHER (1941-1987) played tuba, while ELGIN HOWARTH was another trumpeter. JUSTIN CONNOLLY was a composer and esteemed music teacher. The Philip Jones ensemble recorded his composition "Cinquepaces" in 1972. Jagged at right edge from removal from bound book. Fine condition.
