Typed Letter signed: "Phil Burton" as US Representative, 1 page, 8x10½. Washington, D.C., 1967 July 31. On House letterhead to Marion Farrand, San Francisco, California. In full: "Because I represent the Fifth Congressional District, in which you live, Congressman Mailliard has referred to me your recent letter. Thank you for letting me know your apprehensions regarding the use of the Panama Canal by the United States. Please be assured that I will keep your views in mind on this matter. Sincerely." Accompanied by matching typed envelope to same addressee. Phil Burton (1926-1983), a US Air Force veteran of the Korean conflict, represented California in the US House of Representatives from 1964 until his death. One of Congress' most liberal members, he was one of only 3 to vote against President Johnson's appropriation bill to fund the Vietnam War. He led the successful effort to abolish the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1975, and was an early advocate of federal funding for AIDS research. When Burton died in office, his wife, Sala Burton, won a special election to replace him, serving until her own death in 1987. His brother, John Burton, also served in the US Congress (1975-1982). San Francisco's federal building is named for Burton. Mailing fold (not affecting signature). Fine condition.
