Collector's ink stamp on verso dates signature: July 2, 1936. British character actor and
screenwriter Phillip Merivale (1886-1946) was a stage actor before entering films in the silent
era. His films included Alfred Hitchcock's Mr. and Mrs. Smith (1941) and Orson Welles'
The Stranger (1946). He was married to actresses Viva Birkett and Gladys Cooper; his son was
actor John Merivale. Saul Goodman (1919-2003), a New York business man by day, pursued
his love of film and theatre in the evening, making friends with many celebrities. While other
autograph seekers offered album leaves, Goodman presented stars with snazzy
photographs, a rarity then, to sign in fountain pen. Very lightly worn at corners. Fine
