Signature: "Phillps Brooks/Boston/September 16 1885", 4¼x3½.
Brooks (1835-1893) was ordained an Episcopal minister in 1859, moving from
Philadelphia to Trinity Church in Boston ten years later. An inspiring preacher
who drew large crowds, he wrote "O Little Town of Bethlehem" (1867),
inspired by a visit to the Holy Land. Many of his sermons and lectures
were published, including his Lectures on Preaching at Yale (1877).
Phillips Brooks House at his alma mater, Harvard University, is named after
him. Pinhead sized spot in upper left corner. Mounting remnants on verso (slight
show through). Otherwise, fine condition.
