PHILLIPS BROOKS
Phillip Brooks sends an autograph letter of thanks for the note about
his book.
Autograph Letter signed: "Phillips Brooks", 2p, 4¾x7¾. On
personal letterhead. Boston, Massachusetts, 1880 January 7. To "Dear
Mr. Ward". In full: I thank you most truly & gratefully for
your kind note. It says about my little book just what I should most wish to
have true concerning it. & while I dare not think that I can claim all that
you say, it is a deep satisfaction to know that I seem to have made any
success at all in the effort to tell of Christ the Son of God & the Son of
Man. I assure you that your note has given me true pleasure." Brooks
(1835-1893) was ordained an Episcopal minister in 1859, moving from Philadelphia
to Trinity Church in Boston ten years later. An inspiring preacher who drew
large crowds, he wrote "O Little Town of Bethlehem" (1867), inspired by a visit
to the Holy Land. Many of his sermons and lectures were published, including
his Lectures on Preaching at Yale (1877). Phillips Brooks House at his
alma mater, Harvard University, is named after him. Slightly faded. Faint
pinhead sized spots. Tape mounting remnants on page 2. Otherwise, fine
condition.
