Sends a note agreeing on arrangements when he travels to Somerville
and gives his best wishes
Typed Letter signed: "Phillips Brooks", 1p, 4¾x8. On personal
letterhead. Boston, Massachusetts, 1892 December 14. To Mr. Durell. In
full: "I thank you for your note and shall be very glad indeed to agree
to the arrangements that you have made so cordially and kindly for the Sunday of
my visit to Somerville. I shall be glad to see as much of you as I can. I send
you my good wishes for the Christmas and New Year's times and am always
sincerely your friend." Brooks (1835-1893) was ordained an Episcopal
minister in 1859, moving from Philadelphia to Trinity Church in Boston ten years
later. An inspiring preacher who drew large crowds, he wrote "O Little Town of
Bethlehem" (1867), inspired by a visit to the Holy Land. Many of his
sermons and lectures were published, including his Lectures on Preaching
at Yale (1877). Phillips Brooks House at his alma mater, Harvard University,
is named after him. Stray ink marks near top of page. Mounting tape remnants
on left side. Vertical fold touches "p" in "Phillips". Otherwise, fine condition.
