PHYLLIS COATES
Handwritten letter, praising friends in the Tucson theater scene
Autograph Letter signed: "Phyllis Coates", 1 page, 8½x11. No place, no date. To "Dear Dough", in full: "Here are the photos. [Items not included.] If you can - see my dearest friend in the production of 'Jesus Christ Superstar' opening in Tucson next month. Go back stage and say hello. He would like that: Bart Phillips [?]. We also have another friend, great actor, who is active in theater there - Benjamin Stewart! Keep up the good work and may God bless you." Phyllis Coates, born Gypsie Ann Evarts Stell in Wichita Falls, Texas in 1927, starred in many B-movies of the 1950s, often westerns and science fiction. After playing Lois Lane in Superman and the Mole Men (1951), she was the first to play Lois in the TV series, The Adventures of Superman (1952). Her numerous TV guest appearances in later years included the role of Lois Lane's mother in the TV series Lois and Clark (1994). When she wrote this letter, Coates had just appeared in Thomson's Ghost, and unsold comedy pilot broadcast as a TV movie in 1966. Her next film role would be as mother of title character Barbara Hershey in The Baby Maker (1970). Coates, by the way, shares the suspicion that TV Superman George Reeves was a murder victim, not a suicide. But she rejects the interpretation offered in the film Hollywoodland (2007). Lightly worn. Lightly toned at top edge. Slightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
