PHYLLIS FRASER The actress, businesswoman, and writer signed this card in black ink Signature: “Phyllis Fraser / (Wagner)” in black ink on a 3½x2 card. Phyllis Fraser (1916-2006) was an actress who became known for her significant roles as a young girl, appearing in many shorts in the early 1930s before her breakthrough role opposite John Wayne in Winds of the Wasteland (1936). Her final performance was in For Beauty's Sake (1941) just five years later. Her first marriage to publishing magnate Bennett Cerf led to a new career as a publisher. She became the co-founder of Beginner Books alongside Ted Geisel (better known as Dr. Seuss) and his wife Helen. This huge series of books, still popular today, only uses a vocabulary of a few hundred words; the first list of words that the books were restricted to using was written by the actress herself. The Beginner Books series began in 1957 and played a huge part in making Random House a major publishing force. Fine condition.
