Signature: "Phyllis Bottome", 5¼x2 card. Phyllis Bottome
was the pen name of Phyllis Forbes Dennis (1884-1963), the wife of Alban
Erman Forbes Dennis, MI-6 Station Chief in several European countries under
cover as a Passport Control Officer. In 1924 Phyllis founded an experimental
school in Austria, with an educational philosophy based on the theories of
psychologist Alfred Adler, her own teacher. One of her students was Bond
author Ian Fleming, who remained close to both Phyllis and Erman Dennis.) As
Bottome, she wrote nearly three dozen books, mostly novels. Four of these were
made into films, beginning with Private Worlds (1934). Her best known
work was The Mortal Storm (1940), the first US film to condemn the Nazis
directly (with Robert Young cast as the Nazi villain!) She also wrote a
biography of Adler. Lightly worn. Irregularly cut at bottom edge. Ink notes
(unknown hand) on verso (no show through). Otherwise, fine condition.
