Typed note signed: "P.L. Boal", in blue ink, 1 page, 2 ¾x4 ½. La Ferme de Chignens. In full: "Dear Mr. Stanhope: I enclose autographed photo (not included) as you requested on Oct. 28, 1963. Yours truly,". Pierre de Lagarde Boal (1895-1966) was an American diplomat and aviator. He was a volunteer during the 1st World War in the French 1st Regiment of Cuirassiers, then a pilot in the Lafayette Air Squadron. At the end of the war, he was Captain, Knight of the Legion d'Honneur, and liaison officer between the French army and the American pilots or observers detached in the French air squadrons. In 1941-1942 he was ambassador's deputy in Nicaragua and US Ambassador in Bolivia from 1942 to 1944. He died of a "cerebral vascular accident" on May 24, 1966 at the American hospital on 63 Victor Hugo Boulevard, Neuilly-sur-Seine, France. Slightly toned. Minor nick at top margin. Corners rounded. Light stain on front. Writing on verso (unknown hand). Otherwise, fine condition.
