Photograph inscribed and signed (in French, translated): "Cordially to Mr. Bill Smith/P Montanne". B/w, 4x6. French boxer Pierre Montanne (1919-1991) fought professionally from 1942 to 1952, his first 12 bouts coming under German occupation. He was France's lightweight champion (1948-1951), and held the European title for 3 months in 1951. Square Ring magazine called his 12-round loss to Alfie Clay in Sydney, Australia (October 1949) "the worst decision of all time." Montanne's overall record was 35-13-4, scoring 10 knockouts and suffering 5. Corners lightly worn and creased. Ink notes (unknown hand) on bottom margin. White out on bottom margin. Pencil and ink notes (unknown hand) on verso. Surface markings and scratches (not seen head on). Otherwise, fine condition.
